My Story So Far

Hey, love. I came to this place in my journey, as so many of us do, through my own health challenges and those of my children. It’s been such an amazing journey that I’d like to share what I’ve learned so far with you.

My memories of childhood and into my early 20’s are mostly about debilitating migraines (which started when I was quite young), urinary infections, “spastic colon” (they didn’t call it irritable bowel back then), terrible acne and irregular periods. In my early 20’s I was told I wouldn’t be able to have children due to PCOS. I didn’t do much to change my circumstances because quite frankly I didn’t think there was anything I could do. I assumed this was just happening to me and I would have to learn how to live with it.

Then I moved to Montana after graduate school at the age of 23 and met an acupuncturist that changed my life and more importantly, my outlook on life! Within 3 months, we had my migraines under control and I had a plan I was implementing to begin healing my gut. I’ll be honest, I didn’t stick to my plan all that well – I was in my 20’s after all – but I did find an extraordinary acupuncturist as soon as I moved back to North Carolina and she kept me on track.

And what she and I were doing must have been working because, quite by surprise, I became pregnant a couple of years later! Who knew?! That pregnancy was fraught with challenges almost from day 1 and after a month in the hospital during my second trimester, I delivered a little boy at 27 weeks gestation. He weighed 1lb 12oz and was about 12in long and spent 3 long months in the NICU before coming home. He’s 19 now. As terrible as all of that was…and I’ll spare you the details….my body was very different afterwards (better in lots of ways) and now I had an even more important reason to get healthy. Not only that, I had to try to keep him healthy and that was a learning curve I didn’t think I’d be able to conquer.

3 years later, quite by surprise…again (you’d think I would have figured out how this happens by now!), I found myself pregnant. Interesting that I had not connected the fact that healing my gut would heal my hormones too! I was given all the horror stories about another pre-term birth and put on bed rest for 28 weeks but managed to persevere through 4 pre-term labor scares. At 40 weeks and 1 day, I gave birth to my baby girl.

Her health, however, was far from ideal and, coupled with the illnesses her brother kept contracting, as well as my own health challenges that resurfaced…I mean, who has time to take care of themselves with two sick babies….I sought out the experts and went back to school. I was told by a prominent Pediatric Gastroenterologist that “the doctor I needed didn’t exist”. So I decided to try and become that doctor….and have been practicing and learning and healing ever since.

I will also tell you that both children (19 and 16 at this writing) are smart, amazingly talented, independent and healthy. They have also taken responsibility for their health and lifestyle in a way I didn’t quite anticipate in teenagers.

My children have been and continue to be my greatest teachers and inspiration! I continue to explore this thing called healing with curiosity and I hope you’ll join me!
